Moving east across the country, we had finally arrived at the south side of Vatnajökull, Iceland’s largest glacier and home to Jökulsárlón, the famous glacial lake. Standing on the cliffs over looking the water was breathtaking. Beautiful blue water, icebergs floating in procession with the incoming tide, ice capped mountains looming in the distance, and oddly enough, an unnerving swarm of birds circling about.
I remember it being awesome though.

We took a detour on F980 in an attempt to get to somewhere inland, not sure where exactly, but it seemed like their was cool stuff at the end. The original road we thought was correct was directly down the river bed. It seemed legit at the time, but then the path just died away and rivers began popping up in our way. It may not have been the smartest move to continue on, but it also wasn’t the worst place to get stuck in the mud. In a river valley with snow capped mountains all around, i could deal with that. After digging ourselves out of the mud, we double backed and found a path that wound along the side of the mountain. There may have been a gate or two in the way, but hey, no one said we couldn’t let ourselves in.
After winding through river beds and wandering around the valley, we headed towards Djúpivogur to get some rest. As always, we made a few pit stops along the way to see what the cool shit signs had in store for us. They didn’t let us down.
