Overall, the weather we had, although cold, was quite fantastic. Clear skies and no rain almost every day. However, this day turned very quickly from a light drizzle to hurricane force winds and rain. We were attempting to make our way west across Snæfellsnes Peninsula to see Snæfellsjökull and Kirkjufell among other things. After an (un)fortunate detour due to lack of navigation, we ended running through a red lava field in search of a cave, sat in a gas station waiting out the hurricane, and then somehow ended up in a very patriotic Icelandic man’s house in a small valley between two mountains.
Still not quite sure why there was a ton of red sand in this lava field. But hey, its the Land of Fire and Ice, everything goes. Apparently there was also a cave somewhere in this field. No signs, no directions. So what do we do? Take off running in every direction while it’s cold and down pouring in an attempt to find it. Great idea.
Even the sheep were smart enough to at least try to hide from the rain.
The gas station we were sitting in for an hour awaiting the end of the hurricane happened to be right next to Kirkjufell, one of the peaks I was looking forward to seeing. After deciding going further into the peninsula was going to be a waste, we headed back towards the mainland, but not before at least driving by so i could snap a picture through the car window.
Too many nights camping, sometimes showering, and no hot food for days will do strange things to people. Us? It drove us to rent a house, down some wine in the hot tub,… use Icelandic flags as capes, and… pose on the porch… to each his own.

A great nights sleep in a actual bed with an actual pillow makes a world of a difference. Made our own coffee in the morning, sat on a couch with a mountain view, breathed in some fresh Icelandic air, and we were ready to go. A few more waterfalls and caves were on the agenda before departing.
