Today was the day with the iconic black beach. We ran around it the previous night in the cold and wind but that did not do it justice. We woke early in order to beat the tourists coming from the capital for the daily tours. We were unfortunately still in close enough proximity to the capital where the tours would arrive decently early in the morning and swarm the more popular destinations and make it hassle to thoroughly enjoy the location. Black beaches, basalt rocks, black lava columns, a few hipster pics, waterfalls, and one not so epic light house later we completed our 8th day in the Land of Fire and Ice.
The west side of the iconic black sand beach, with views of Reynisfjara and the Reynisdrangar columns.
In actuality, there was nothing wrong with the lighthouse. However, being in the realm of the vikings and the Land of Fire and Ice, I had envisioned the lighthouse as one of those iconic lighthouses built entirely of stone, spiraling upward on a single rock formation out to sea with huge waves crashing around it. And this is all i got… What a let down.
Long hair, a little bit of graffiti, a run down house in an Icelandic field. Check.
The black beach and basalt columns, where even the buildings and bars are built from the beach’s black pebbles.

As we began to make our way around the island and towards the massive glacier of Vatnajökull, the likelihood of finding icebergs, snow capped mountains, and even more epic scenery increased drastically. No wonder everyone was in the mood for a sunset stroll up the “flat” path to a nearby waterfall. 30 minutes and 2 miles up later, we had finally made it to Svartifoss, a waterfall completely made of dark lava columns.
