Bugs? In Iceland? Didn’t think that was a thing. How wrong was I. Falling asleep hearing the water of the natural hot springs with a few glasses of wine in me, what could be wrong with this location? Waking up to bugs everywhere, that is what was wrong with this location. I don’t know if it was the warm water, the valley, or the horse trail that rides along the river, but something in that exact spot where we decided to pitch our tents attracted so many bugs in the morning. Pack. Quickly. Get down the path as fast as possible. Go.
Sometimes you find volcanic crater lakes. Sometimes you find volcanic crater lakes with crazy tourists swimming across the frigid water.
We had driven by this waterfall multiple times already and wanted to stop, but due to it’s proximity to ring road we were waiting for the rest of our group, knowing we were going to pass it once again on our trip around the island.
We made the attempt to get out to Iceland’s main island of Heimaey of the south coast to spend the day, but unfortunately this is where no prior planning let us down. Ferry times to and from the island didn’t jive with our plans, so all we could do was snap a few pictures before getting back on the road.
One of my favorite waterfalls due to the shear size of the falls and how close you can get to the base. May get a little wet, but worth braving it.
